Coldcard Exploit Cracks Air-Gapped Wallet Security
Air-gapped wallets are designed to remain completely disconnected from the internet and all wireless communication, making them a highly secure option for crypto holders. However, recent events have shown that even these wallets can contain critical flaws.
Coldcard, a Bitcoin-only wallet maker, recently fell victim to a massive exploit leading to over $114 million in user losses. The incident highlights that while air-gapped wallets offer strong protection against online threats, they are not immune from potential exploits.
Air-gapped wallets keep private keys isolated from the internet by using QR codes or microSD cards for offline signing. This reduces the risk of remote attacks and makes it more difficult for hackers to gain access to a user's funds.
However, users must still protect their recovery phrase, verify transaction details before signing, and keep the physical device secure. Losing the recovery phrase or having it stolen can compromise access to a wallet, while someone with physical access to the device may still be able to attack it depending on its security features.
