Coldcard Exploit Highlights Risks of Cryptocurrency Self-Custody
A recent security incident has highlighted the risks associated with cryptocurrency self-custody. Benjamin Cowen, a Bitcoin analyst, commented on the issue, stating that it's 'devastating' to see so many people lose their Bitcoin due to what they thought was the right thing.
The Coldcard hardware wallet exploit affected hundreds of wallets, resulting in the loss of around 594 BTC, valued at approximately $50 million. The stolen funds were combined into a single address, indicating a coordinated operation.
Cowen linked the vulnerability to a broader issue with cryptocurrencies, where speculative memecoins, rug pulls, and security flaws continue to dominate the market, making it difficult for the general public to trust cryptocurrency.
