Coldcard Flaw Exposes Bitcoin Security Weaknesses
René Pickhardt, a developer who works on the Lightning Network, recently revealed that he has been hesitant to invest in Bitcoin due to concerns over private key custody. In a series of tweets, he admitted that his fears about making mistakes during seed phrase generation and safeguarding private keys outweighed his optimism about Bitcoin's long-term potential.
Pickhardt's testimony coincided with the disclosure of a major vulnerability incident affecting Coldcard wallets. A flaw in the random number generator implementation compromised the entropy of seed phrases generated under certain conditions, allowing external attackers to predict key sequences by relying on static values such as device serial numbers.
The breach facilitated the theft of over 1,755 BTC, worth more than $100 million in cumulative losses for affected users. Pickhardt's concerns about storage risks and software flaws affecting Bitcoin security have sparked a debate within the developer community.
