Coldcard Flaw Exposes Weakness in Self-Custody Security
The Coldcard hardware wallet vulnerability has shaken confidence in self-custody security. Launched in 2017, Coldcard is a Bitcoin-only hardware wallet designed for advanced users with physical isolation and verifiable firmware. However, a recent incident revealed that the wallet's key-generation process contained a long-undetected flaw.
The issue originated from insufficient randomness during seed generation, allowing attackers to computationally enumerate potential seeds. This affected around 5,200 addresses, resulting in an estimated loss of $130 million as of August 7. Coinkite, the developer of Coldcard, released a security advisory and patched firmware, but users need to generate new wallet seeds and migrate their assets.
The incident highlights the importance of continuous auditing and validation of critical code, including random-number-generation and entropy generation processes. It also raises questions about concentration risk in self-custody solutions and the need for multisignature setups and independent sources of randomness.
