Tim Lamb, a 38-year-old marketer, recently found himself facing a difficult decision while on vacation in the Channel Islands. News of a cryptocurrency hack had reached him, and he was unsure whether to rush home and check on his Bitcoin or finish his trip.

Lamb ultimately decided to wait, but by Saturday afternoon, his two Bitcoins, worth around $130,000, were gone.

The hack targeted Coldcard, an offline hardware wallet made by Toronto-based Coinkite Inc. The secret code for unlocking Lamb's Bitcoin was stamped on a metal plate hidden inside a fake dictionary.

Lamb thought he had done everything right to protect his investment, but the incident highlights the potential risks even in seemingly secure storage methods.
