Coldcard Security Flaw Sparks Institutional Custody Shift
A recent security flaw in Coldcard hardware wallets has led to the theft of over 1,000 Bitcoin from individual investors. Despite users following standard security practices, including buying a trusted hardware wallet and generating seed phrases offline, the vulnerability caused significant losses.
Coldcard's incident is fueling expectations for increased demand for institutional custody as large amounts of Bitcoin are being deposited to centralized exchanges. This development could be a turning point in how investors store digital assets.
According to Joe Burnett, head of strategy at Strive, the Coldcard incident may permanently alter trust in self-custody. As long as Bitcoin's own security remains intact, the failure of a specific custody method does not invalidate Bitcoin as a monetary system.
