Coldcard Wallet Security Incident Sparks Concerns Over Bitcoin Safety

A recent security incident involving Coldcard wallets has led to concerns about Bitcoin's safety and security. According to Anthony Pompliano, the issue is not a hack of the Bitcoin protocol but rather a failure of third-party wallet technology.

Pompliano explained that the verified losses from the incident exceeded $86 million, with over 1,360 BTC swept from affected wallets. He warned that inaccurate descriptions of the event could distort investor understanding and undermine confidence in the market.

The Coldcard security failure was attributed to reduced seed-generation entropy, which made certain recovery phrases easier to calculate than intended. Coinkite, the manufacturer of the affected devices, released corrected firmware to address the issue.

Pompliano cautioned that the incident could deepen fear in an already bearish market and predicted more anger, internal disputes, and misplaced blame across the industry.
