Commodities Rally Broadens as Scarcity Takes Multiple Forms
The commodity rally continues to broaden its scope, lifting the Bloomberg Commodity Total Return Index (BCOMTR) by around 3.3% this week and pushing its year-to-date return above 30%. All major sectors except industrial metals contributed to the gains, with soft commodities leading the way.
Agriculture has become an increasingly important part of the rally, driven by concerns about production prospects in various regions due to weather patterns associated with El Niño. Sugar and coffee prices have surged amid fears of disrupted supply chains, while grains are also facing uncertainty due to Black Sea export disruptions and rising input costs.
The US Treasury's announcement of expanded liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated government bonds has added another dimension to the hard-asset story. The initiative aimed to address market functioning but may not resolve persistent fiscal deficits and growing supply of government debt.
