Compound Shifts Focus to Institutional DeFi with $52M Development Budget
Compound Foundation has announced a significant shift in its development focus by naming a new leadership team and allocating $52 million to institutional DeFi. The team includes Aaron Schnarch as Executive Director, Christopher Donovan as COO, Steven Liu as CPO, and Leo Eikelman as CTO.
The new program is aimed at expanding beyond the protocol's core user base by supporting native real-world assets (RWAs), improving capital efficiency, and providing integration tools for financial institutions. This move marks a structural attempt to tap into the institutional market, where banks and asset managers rarely adopt protocols that do not fit their compliance and loan servicing workflows.
The $52 million development budget is the largest ever approved by Compound, indicating a willingness to fund engineering capacity on a large scale. The new leadership structure also suggests preparation for external counterparties and long procurement processes, which is a significant shift in DeFi's operating model.
