Concentrated Risk: Crypto Hacks Rise 67% in August with Estimated Losses at $136.3 Million
Crypto hacks rose 67% in August compared to July, but estimated losses fell sharply to $136.3 million. According to PeckShield, more than half of this month's reported losses came from a single incident involving Tectonic's borrowing event, which resulted in approximately $74 million in losses.
The number of major crypto hacks increased to 50 in August from 30 in July, while estimated losses fell by 49.5% from the previous month. However, the figures show that more incidents occurred but with lower reported losses, rather than clear evidence of a security improvement.
The Tectonic incident involved an attacker borrowing about $75 million before Cronos halted block production. Roughly $6 million of this amount reached Ethereum, while a later rollback reversed about $68.7 million remaining on Cronos. This means that the estimated gross amount borrowed was not necessarily a confirmed final net loss.
PeckShield's top ten cases produced $123.34 million, or about 90.5% of the total losses. Most reported losses came from a small group, and the monthly figure is not final due to potential recoveries, reversals, or updated investigations.
