Congress Ramps Up AI Regulation Efforts Amid Human Extinction Fears

More than 20 members of Congress have called for stronger AI regulation following a researcher's warning that Anthropic and OpenAI are 'gambling with our lives.'

Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass, said bipartisan support has reached 'a tipping point' after Jacob Coxon announced he quit his job at Anthropic on Tuesday.

Coxon previously worked as a researcher at OpenAI and wrote that the people building AI 'earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.'

Several lawmakers have introduced bills to regulate AI, including Rep. Jay Obernolte's FRONTIER Act, which aims to establish a framework for governing advanced AI models.
