Congress Tackles Crypto Scams with CLARITY Act
Crypto scams are becoming increasingly prevalent in the US, particularly affecting older Americans and rural families. In response to this growing problem, Congress is considering the CLARITY Act, which aims to establish clear regulations for digital assets and combat fraud.
The bill would define regulatory roles for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as create a public-private task force to help law enforcement track and prosecute digital-asset crimes.
Kansas community banks, local entrepreneurs, and everyday savers have a direct stake in this legislation. The updated CLARITY Act contains measures aimed at elder fraud and crypto-ATM scams, which are precisely the protections championed by Sen. Jerry Moran.
The bill's success is uncertain, as it needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. With only days left before the Senate leaves for its August recess, momentum may stall into next year when a midterm election makes every complicated bill harder to pass.
