Connecticut Issues Consumer Alert on Unregulated DeFi Exchange Risks

Share

Connecticut officials have issued a consumer alert after a local resident reported losing $200,000 to an unregulated DeFi cryptocurrency exchange. According to state Attorney General William Tong, the individual was deceived by someone claiming to know them and deposited the funds into the platform.

The alert, which was issued on September 3, warns investors about the risks associated with using offshore DeFi platforms that operate beyond U.S. regulatory protections. These platforms often promise easier access and higher returns, but officials say they may leave investors with little to no recourse if something goes wrong.

Tong emphasized that 'this isn't innovation, it's exploitation,' and urged investors to do their research before handing over any money. He also noted that some offshore platforms provide leverage of up to 250x, allowing small market movements to erase deposited collateral.
