Connecticut Warns Residents About Unregulated DeFi Exchanges

Share

A Connecticut resident has lost access to $200,000 deposited into an unregulated offshore DeFi exchange after being deceived by a person claiming to know them. The state's Attorney General's Office issued a warning about the risks of using unregulated decentralized finance exchanges, citing this case as an example.

The officials warned that users of offshore platforms may have few practical options for recovering funds after fraud, a security breach, or platform failure. They advised residents to confirm whether a service is registered before sending funds and to be cautious of high leverage offered by some exchanges.

Some offshore exchanges offer leverage as high as 250x and synthetic exposure to U.S. stocks through perpetual contracts. The CFTC advises traders to use registered exchanges, examine contract rules and pricing methods, and understand how margin requirements affect liquidation.
