Consensys Splits into Consumer-Focused MetaMask and Institutional Blockchain Company
Consensys Software Inc., the company behind MetaMask, is undergoing a significant restructuring. By the end of 2026, the consumer business will be separated from its institutional blockchain infrastructure operations. This split reflects the growing divergence in priorities for these two distinct areas.
The new Consensys will focus on Ethereum infrastructure and help financial institutions deploy blockchain technology for tokenization, stablecoins, and other on-chain financial services. MetaMask, on the other hand, will remain focused on consumer self-custody while expanding beyond crypto into payments, savings, investing, and traditional financial products.
MetaMask has already been evolving beyond its roots as an Ethereum browser extension for accessing decentralized applications and managing crypto assets. In June, it launched Money Account, allowing users to earn up to 4% variable APY on eligible mUSD stablecoin balances through DeFi lending strategies.
