Consensys Splits: MetaMask to Focus on Consumer Finance
Consensys Software Inc., the company behind the popular MetaMask wallet, is undergoing a significant restructuring by the end of 2026. The existing legal entity will rebrand as MetaMask and focus on consumer self-custody and financial services.
META CEO Joe Lubin said that he's stepping into the role full-time to recognize that 'consumer finance deserves the same focus and ambition' as Ethereum. This shift marks a significant departure from Consensys' original mission of building blockchain infrastructure for banks, asset managers, and financial market operators.
The new MetaMask will expand its product surface beyond crypto storage, offering payments, savings, investing, and traditional financial products through offerings like Money Account, the mUSD stablecoin, and a Mastercard-enabled card. The company has surpassed 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries and handled trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume.
The new Consensys will retain the protocols and institutional infrastructure businesses, including Linea, Besu, and Teku, under CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham.
