Coral Springs Police Demand Crypto ATM Ban Amid Wave of $320K Scams
Coral Springs police are pushing for a ban on cryptocurrency ATM kiosks after a string of fraud cases left at least 26 victims, collectively losing over $320,000 since 2024. The department is advocating for prohibition due to the ease with which scammers use these machines to launder funds.
The victims were mostly above 60 years old, with about 54% falling into this category. In most cases, scammers convinced victims to take out cash and deposit it into a cryptocurrency ATM, then scan a QR code to send the funds to the fraudsters' digital wallet in Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency.
Police say that legitimate law enforcement and federal agents will never request crypto funds. They're urging people to call them, their bank, or a trusted family member before transferring money if they suspect a scam.
