Core DAO Seals Off Excess Rewards with Emergency Hard Fork
Core DAO has announced an emergency hard fork to address a critical issue where validators claimed more CORE rewards than intended. The incident occurred when a small number of malicious validators accrued rewards significantly above the protocol's issuance, prompting Core to act swiftly.
The update from Core stated that the incident had been contained and that malicious validators could no longer draw excess rewards. This was followed by an earlier status update on Monday, which detailed the issue and assured users that their assets remained safe.
Several exchanges restricted CORE transfers around the time of the incident due to suspected or confirmed security concerns. These included Coinbase, Bithumb, Coinone, Bitget, and LBank, all of which took measures such as pausing sends and receives, suspending deposits and withdrawals, or citing wallet maintenance.
Core has not disclosed how much CORE was issued or for how long the activity continued, nor has it explained the vulnerability that enabled the validators to obtain the rewards. However, it has committed to publishing a technical postmortem to provide further insight into the incident.
