Core Scientific Transforms from Bitcoin Miner to AI Infrastructure Powerhouse
Core Scientific has undergone a remarkable transformation from a bankrupt Bitcoin mining company to a major provider of infrastructure for artificial intelligence and high-density computing. The company's turnaround illustrates how the value of Bitcoin mining infrastructure can extend beyond cryptocurrency, as power capacity, land, data center facilities, and connections to the electrical grid have become increasingly valuable due to surging demand for AI computing.
The transformation was highlighted by blockchain news account @WuBlockchain on X after Core Scientific emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2024. Rather than relying primarily on Bitcoin mining, the company has shifted its strategy toward providing large-scale computing infrastructure to customers that require substantial amounts of electricity.
By July 2026, Core Scientific had contracted approximately 1.1 gigawatts of customer power capacity, representing more than $24 billion in potential contract revenue. The agreements were primarily with AI companies such as CoreWeave, which has become a major customer and is at the center of the rapidly expanding AI cloud infrastructure market.
