Core Scientific's AI Pivot Transforms Valuation
Core Scientific's story is one of transformation from a struggling Bitcoin miner to a leading player in the AI data center infrastructure market. The company, which listed on Nasdaq in January 2022 under the ticker CORZ, was hit hard by the crypto winter in 2022. Bitcoin prices fell, mining difficulty increased, and rising energy costs squeezed margins.
Core Scientific filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2022 with approximately $4 million in cash. However, the company's restructuring plan preserved its most valuable assets, including data centers, land, grid connections, and supporting infrastructure across several U.S. states.
The turning point came when Core Scientific partnered with AI cloud infrastructure company CoreWeave. The two companies signed a 12-year agreement to provide approximately 200 MW of high-performance computing infrastructure, with potential cumulative revenue exceeding $3.5 billion. This partnership marked a shift in Core Scientific's valuation framework, from focusing on Bitcoin output to prioritizing contracted capacity and long-term contracts.
The agreements between CoreWeave and Core Scientific covered approximately 588 MW, representing approximately $10.2 billion in potential cumulative revenue. This change in focus led investors to reassess the company's value, with a growing emphasis on contracted capacity, project delivery timelines, and stable revenue streams.
