Corporations Embracing Bitcoin as Long-Term Store of Value
A growing number of companies are adopting a corporate Bitcoin holding strategy, where they allocate part of their balance sheet to the cryptocurrency as a long-term store of value. This approach treats Bitcoin like gold, protecting against currency debasement and inflation.
The first company to popularize this strategy was Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, which began converting cash reserves into Bitcoin in 2020. Since then, dozens of public firms across various sectors have followed suit.
A key element of a corporate Bitcoin holding strategy is fair-value accounting for crypto holdings. This means that companies must measure their Bitcoin assets at fair value each reporting period, with changes recognized in net income rather than the older cost-less-impairment model.
