Cosmos EVM Incident Highlights Risks for Token Holders
A recent security incident involving the Cosmos EVM highlights the importance of patching blockchain bugs and restoring holders' economic position. In the incident, attackers were able to extract legitimate tokens from vesting accounts without increasing total token supply, leading to losses for holders.
The bug affected production chains running versions below v0.6.2 or v0.7.2, allowing attackers to drain funds from pooled staking balances and participant wallets. The incident resulted in approximately $2.87 million being exchanged on decentralized exchanges and $2.85 million sold through centralized exchanges.
The patch may have succeeded technically, but it did not restore the token's prior liquidity conditions or prevent holders from facing losses. In some cases, holders may still face access, compatibility, and user-action burdens during a transition to a new environment.
