Cosmos Labs Admits Error in Vulnerability Judgment, Six Chains Attacked
Cosmos Labs has acknowledged an error in its judgment regarding a vulnerability in Cosmos EVM, which led to attacks on six blockchain networks from August 20-25. The attackers exploited the integer underflow bug by inflating account balances to their maximum value of 2^256-1 and then reversing the operation to withdraw the inflated funds.
The total loss was approximately $5.7 million in stolen tokens, with MANTRA losing 72.09 billion tokens (around $36 million), TAC losing nearly 30 billion TAC, and KiiChain losing around 148 million KII tokens. MANTRA and KiiChain criticized Cosmos Labs for not providing timely notification of the affected chains and recommending shutdowns.
Cosmos Labs has stated that it coordinated with 40 networks in response to the attacks and assisted 13 networks in completing fixes or shutting down before they were compromised.
