Cows, Farts, and Whiskey Barrels: The Weirdest Things Tokenized Onchain
The tokenization of assets has become increasingly common in recent years, and it's not just valuable items like art or real estate that are being turned into digital tokens. In Brazil, a farmer used cows as collateral for a loan worth $19,600 by putting them on a blockchain-based platform.
This raised the question: if cows can be tokenized, what else can't? The answer is many things, including farts, which were recorded and minted into non-fungible tokens (NFTs) by filmmaker Alex Ramírez-Mallis during the pandemic. Each fart was sold for $85 in Ether.
Other unusual assets that have been tokenized include whiskey barrels, racehorses, uranium, fish sales revenue, music royalties, human skin, a Banksy print that was burned and then tokenized, and even the first tweet ever posted on Twitter.
Chris Turner, co-founder of impact investment firm KULA, warned that putting collectibles or luxury items on blockchain doesn't automatically make them more liquid or valuable if the underlying rights and transfer process remain unchanged.
