CPI Report Looms Large: Markets Bracing for Inflation Surprise
The upcoming CPI report has markets on edge as it may influence the Federal Reserve's next move. Bitcoin's price is struggling to break above $80,000, while U.S. stocks are under pressure due to rising Treasury yields and oil prices.
The August inflation data will be closely watched by investors, particularly since it is the last reading available before the Fed meeting on September 15-16. The market consensus predicts a 0.4% increase in headline CPI from July, keeping annual inflation at 3.4%. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, is expected to rise 0.2%, bringing the annual rate down to 2.4%.
Energy prices are a significant concern for the Fed as they could drive up headline CPI. Brent crude has recently surpassed $100 a barrel due to geopolitical tensions, which may lead to higher transportation and consumer costs.
