Cramer Sells Bitcoin Amid Quantum Computing Fears
Jim Cramer has announced he will sell his entire Bitcoin position due to concerns about the threat of quantum computers compromising the cryptocurrency's security within three years. According to IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, a significant breakthrough in quantum computing is imminent, which could challenge modern cryptography by 2025-2026.
Cramer based his decision on Krishna's warning that a powerful enough quantum computer using Shor's algorithm could derive private keys from public keys, compromising the security of Bitcoin holdings. This vulnerability affects approximately 30% of the total Bitcoin supply, mainly older wallets and those with publicly revealed keys.
Recent estimates suggest that breaking Bitcoin's cryptography might require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, roughly 20 times less than earlier projections. However, many conservative researchers predict a cryptographically relevant machine will not arrive until the 2030s or even 2040s.
