Cronje: Decentralized Finance Ecosystem Has Evolved Beyond Its Original Meaning

Andre Cronje, creator of Yearn.finance and Fantom Network, says most decentralized finance (DeFi) has strayed from its original meaning. In a conversation at Chain Reaction X, he argued that true DeFi exists only in small pockets, with the rest of the ecosystem evolving into conventional finance on-chain.

Cronje's comments arrive as quantitative signals indicate contraction in DeFi activity and regulators scrutinize DAOs' decentralization. With DeFi total value locked (TVL) falling sharply from $167 billion in early October 2025 to roughly $75 billion at the time of writing, the debate over decentralization has shifted from philosophy to governance design and regulatory classification.

Cronje claims that true DeFi should be decentralized, immutable, and without an intermediary. However, he acknowledges that most protocols today do not meet these standards. He reframes this shift as an evolution into 'onchain finance or open finance,' where roles traditionally belonging to banks are performed by other entities within the protocol.
