Cronje Declares 'DeFi is Dead' Amid Governance Token Concentration Concerns
Renowned DeFi figure Andre Cronje has stated that true decentralization is no longer a reality in many DeFi protocols. In an interview, he argued that 'DeFi doesn't exist anymore' outside of niche projects and cited the need for decentralized, immutable, and intermediary-free systems.
Cronje's comments echo concerns raised by the European Central Bank (ECB) earlier this year. The ECB published a working paper questioning the decentralization of prominent DeFi protocols like Aave, MakerDAO, Ampleforth, and Uniswap, which found that the top 100 governance token holders controlled more than 80% of each protocol's supply.
According to DefiLlama data, total value locked (TVL) in DeFi has plummeted by over half in the past 10 months, from $167 billion in early October 2021 to $75 billion at present. This decline has led some to question whether these protocols can still be considered truly decentralized.
Cronje proposes a new term: 'onchain finance or open finance', which he believes better describes the current state of DeFi. He argues that many projects have moved away from true decentralization and are now governed by intermediaries, much like traditional banking systems.
