Cronos is shifting its focus to stablecoins and tokenized assets as part of its 2026 strategy, which also includes always-on financial markets. The network has made significant progress with its Cronos EVM (Ethereum-compatible smart-contract network), boasting block times of around 0.5 seconds and median fees below one cent.

The Cronos EVM combines technology from Ethereum and Cosmos, allowing developers to adapt applications built on Ethereum without rebuilding their entire software stack. This EVM support enables the use of familiar tools such as Solidity, Foundry, and Hardhat for smart contracts related to token swaps, lending, asset transfers, and other decentralized applications.

Cronos has consolidated around its main EVM chain, with Cronos POS serving a separate role for native CRO staking and governance. The network announced the planned shutdown of Cronos zkEVM on June 3, 2026, with the closure scheduled for June 3, 2027.
