Cronos Blockchain Halted After $74M Tectonic Lending Exploit
Cronos validators froze all trading and cross-chain transfers on Sunday after detecting an exploit on Tectonic, the network's biggest decentralized lending platform.
An attacker manipulated the price of TONIC, Tectonic's native token, inflating it roughly 300-fold in 20 minutes before borrowing more than $74 million against the fake collateral value.
Only about $6 million made it across the bridge to Ethereum before validators paused the network and cut off further cross-chain movement. The bulk of the stolen funds remained trapped on Cronos, though remaining there onchain doesn't mean they've been recovered - a network restart could let those funds move again unless validators or protocol developers step in with restrictions first.
The damage to Tectonic's balance sheet was severe either way: the protocol's total value locked fell from roughly $122 million before the incident to around $3 million afterward, a collapse that effectively wiped out the platform's lending capacity overnight.
