Cronos Recovered $111M After Exploit, $9.19M Still Missing
Cronos Network suffered a significant exploit on August 30th, where an attacker manipulated the market value of TONIC, the protocol's governance token. The attacker was able to use this distorted valuation to establish an artificially inflated collateral position and borrow approximately $120.4 million across nine lending markets.
The network detected the malicious activity 36 minutes after it began and halted operations at block 90,907,150. After a consensus process, validators approved a rollback to block 90,896,188, which represented the last recorded block before the attack. This reversal restored about $111.2 million in affected funds.
However, the rollback also had unintended consequences, removing transactions from legitimate users who had no connection to the exploit. Approximately $9.19 million was transferred away before network operations were stopped and remains unrecovered.
