Cronos Recovers Most of Exploited Funds After Tectonic Attack
Cronos faced a massive exploit on August 30, where an attacker manipulated collateral values to borrow $120.4 million across nine Tectonic lending markets.
The attack was possible due to the thinly traded TONIC token being used as collateral, and the attacker's ability to push the market price sharply higher within minutes.
Cronos validators halted the blockchain at 14:32:47 UTC and later agreed to restore the chain to its state before the attack. This decision erased 10,961 blocks covering one hour and 54 minutes of chain history.
The rollback recovered most of the affected value, with $111.2 million being restored. However, $9.19 million was lost, leaving it beyond the reach of the rollback.
