Cross-Border Coordination Becomes Crypto's Next Regulatory Test

The crypto industry is shifting from regulatory debates to cross-border coordination. The central question is no longer whether to regulate digital assets, but how different jurisdictions can interoperate and work together.

The end of MiCA's transitional period in July led to a major shakeout in the European market, with only around 244 firms securing authorization out of over 1,200 operating under national frameworks. Meanwhile, the UK finalized its cryptoasset rulebook on June 30th, and the US celebrated the one-year anniversary of the $GENIUS Act becoming law.

The Transatlantic Taskforce for Markets of the Future issued a joint US-UK statement affirming stablecoins as an important vehicle for innovation in digital money. However, agreeing on rules is not enough, they need to be designed to work across borders. Stablecoins illustrate this challenge, with issuers facing different rules on reserves, redemption, and insolvency.

Regulatory frameworks alone are not enough; the technology has moved faster than legislation. DeFi, tokenization, and agentic payments are becoming infrastructure, but each jurisdiction built its framework for its own market, legal system, and political moment.
