Crypto Address Misuse Drains $574.8M in ETH and BNB

A recent study by USENIX Security has revealed that 'address misuse' in crypto led to significant losses of $574.8 million in Ethereum (ETH) and Binance Coin (BNB). The researchers found 65,340 cases of high-risk address misuse involving approximately 2.5 million transactions.

The study focused on the issue of 'Address Misuse,' which occurs when users interact with compromised or malicious addresses, often due to publicly accessible private keys. In one notable case, a Truffle test address was used by attackers to drain funds sent to it. The researchers also found that over 85% of addresses gathered from GitHub had not yet been misused.

The study's detection system achieved 99.11% precision, suggesting that the risk of address misuse could increase if users continue to interact with dormant or compromised addresses. This finding is in line with a recent report by AMBCrypto, which revealed Ethereum-related address poisoning losses totaling approximately $62 million between late 2025 and early 2026.

The researchers also highlighted a case study involving the UniswapV2Router02 address on Sepolia, which had approximately 158,775 transactions by August 2025. A malicious contract was deployed on this address in October 2024, resulting in losses of 3.78 ETH.
