Crypto AI Project ai16z Implodes as Market Cap Crashes to Zero
The once-promising crypto AI project ai16z has come to an abrupt end. In October 2024, ai16z launched a crowdfunding campaign on DAOs.fun with a fundraising goal of $75,000, but it eventually reached a market cap of $2.6 billion. This sparked the creation of numerous AI Agent tokens, which collectively grew in value to nearly $10 billion.
However, as Shaw Walters, founder of the Eliza OS project, points out, the ai16z token is now essentially dead. The foundation has shut down, and there will be no buybacks. Token holders are left to deal with the consequences on their own.
Shaw's tone in his announcement was scathing, accusing the crypto community of being 'spoiled crybabies' and calling out a law firm that sued him on behalf of token holders. The Eliza OS foundation ultimately paid out all its remaining funds to settle the lawsuit.
ai16z's founder Shaw Walters had held onto his tokens worth $25 million, watching them depreciate to zero without ever selling any. He now lives off his savings and writes code daily from a small San Francisco bedroom.
