Crypto as Infrastructure: Coinbase Sees AI Agents Fueling Future Transactions
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says cryptocurrency is not competing with artificial intelligence, but rather will be its essential financial infrastructure. He argues that crypto functions as a general-purpose technology like the internet or electric grid, enabling emerging breakthroughs.
Armstrong claims that autonomous AI agents require real-time, micro-transactional, and fully programmable digital money to operate without human friction. He predicts that software agents will execute daily transaction volumes far exceeding those of human users, handling tasks such as tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and peer-to-peer data purchasing.
Coinbase has been actively deploying dedicated infrastructure to facilitate this shift, including the Layer-2 Base network, the USDC stablecoin framework, and the x402 payment protocol. Over ninety percent of on-chain agentic stablecoin transactions are already taking place on its Base network.
