Crypto Billionaire Buys Mars Flyby Seats, Commands SpaceX Mission

Chun Wang, co-founder of F2Pool and a prominent figure in Bitcoin mining, is taking his ambitions to new heights. He has purchased seats on two upcoming SpaceX Starship missions, which will travel beyond the Earth-Moon system, swing past Mars, and return home.

The two-year voyage will be SpaceX's first crewed flyby of Mars, with Wang commanding the mission. Before embarking on this interplanetary journey, he will join a weeklong commercial flight around the Moon, where he will pass roughly 125 miles above the lunar surface.

This is not Wang's first foray into spaceflight; he funded and commanded the Fram2 mission in 2025, which was the first crewed flight to orbit directly over Earth's poles. In a statement, Wang emphasized the importance of private pressure in pushing human exploration forward, stating that government competition will likely get humans to the Moon regardless, but expressed little confidence that Mars would be achieved within his lifetime without such initiatives.

The move is seen by analysts as part of a wider trend among early crypto founders redirecting their capital into adjacent fields like artificial intelligence, energy, and aerospace. However, observers note that this development will have a limited impact on the Bitcoin mining sector, with hashprice, power contracts, and Bitcoin's price remaining far more significant factors.
