Crypto Billionaires Fuel Farage's Reform UK with £72 Million Double Donation
Reform UK has received two massive donations from crypto billionaires in quick succession. The party's finances have been under scrutiny, but this influx of cash could help to alleviate some of those concerns.
The first donation was made by Ben Delo, who gave the party £36 million just a day after another crypto billionaire, Christopher Harborne, also pledged £36 million. This is on top of a previous £9 million donation from Harborne in August last year.
Harborne said that he had been inspired to match Delo's record donation due to his 'competitive spirit.' He stated that the UK needs a 'profitable and dynamic economy' to address the three 'existential threats' of nuclear war, AI, and climate change. Delo also cited the need for a level playing field in politics as his motivation.
The donations come after reports emerged that MPs were backing measures to cap overseas donations at £100,000 and suspend funding through cryptocurrency. However, these proposals still need to be passed by the House of Lords before becoming law.
Farage has expressed gratitude for the donations, stating that they will help Reform UK to fight the next general election on a level playing field. He also noted that Delo had previously given him £5 million in a gift that is currently under investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog.
