Crypto Builders Flee US Regulatory Pressure
Hayden Adams, founder and CEO of Uniswap Labs, testified before the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee on August 20, stating that US regulatory pressure has driven crypto builders to set up shop in friendlier jurisdictions. This assertion comes from personal experience, as Uniswap received a Wells notice from the SEC in April 2024 and was ultimately dropped in March 2025.
The CFTC imposed a $175,000 penalty on Uniswap Labs in 2024 related to leveraged trading offerings. Adams emphasized that this enforcement-first approach has created a chilling effect extending beyond targeted companies, causing DeFi teams across the ecosystem to recalibrate their legal strategies and some to accelerate plans to move operations outside the US.
The CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee is tasked with translating industry feedback into actionable recommendations. Adams's testimony establishes that the current regulatory environment is not competitive internationally, leaving a challenge for the committee to address.
