Crypto Cards for Travelers: Zero-Fee Foreign Spending Now a Reality
Travelers who hold digital assets are now able to spend them abroad without first converting them into local currency, thanks to a new generation of crypto-funded debit cards. These cards eliminate the 2.9 to 3 percent fee charged by traditional bank debit cards on every foreign purchase.
The three most established providers of these cards - Bybit EU, KAST, and Wirex - are competing for travelers who want to use their digital assets abroad. Bybit EU's Summer Travel Event offers existing cardholders a chance to double their base cashback rate through September 15, 2026, with a lucky draw component for premium travel rewards.
Wirex holds its position in this category partly by being a direct Visa and Mastercard principal member, allowing it to offer genuine zero-percent foreign exchange fees on all account tiers. KAST's Standard tier also carries no annual fee and is available in over 165 countries, with a foreign exchange fee of 0.5 to 1.75 percent on non-USD purchases under standard terms.
When using these cards abroad, the card provider converts just enough of the funded crypto or stablecoin balance into local currency in real time, settling the transaction through standard payment rails. To the merchant, it is indistinguishable from a regular bank card. However, there are some risks to consider, including MCC blacklisting and hotel deposits that can lock up prepaid balances.
