Crypto Casino Delays: Blame Regulatory Compliance, Not Blockchain Tech
The blockchain technology behind casinos is often touted for its fast settlement speeds, but players are still experiencing delays when trying to withdraw their winnings. While it's natural to assume the problem lies with the tech itself, the real issue is elsewhere.
When a player initiates a withdrawal request at a crypto casino, the transaction is broadcast on Ethereum or Solana, where it's confirmed based on network capacity and gas fees. However, this process doesn't take long, less than 10 minutes for most networks.
The bottleneck actually lies in the authorization of the withdrawal request before an on-chain transaction is initiated. The delay occurs as the casino's internal systems decide whether to approve or reject the request, which can involve regulatory and compliance checks. In Canada, for example, casinos must comply with strict regulations that include risk assessment and anti-money laundering (AML) screening.
The regulator, iGaming Ontario, has implemented automated compliance checks, which can cause delays in withdrawal processing. Additionally, casinos have operational liquidity only in hot wallets, while player funds are kept in air-gapped cold storage for security. Large withdrawal requests require manual rebalancing of the hot wallet, which can add a couple of hours to the queue.
