Crypto Clarity Act Fate Remains Uncertain Amid Senate Delay
The Crypto Clarity Act's fate is far from sealed, according to Justin Slaughter, Paradigm's vice president of regulatory affairs and a former senior adviser at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Despite the US Senate's decision to delay consideration until September, Slaughter claims the legislation 'isn't dead.' The initial expectation was for a procedural vote before lawmakers departed for the August recess; however, negotiations stalled, pushing the vote to September.
The bill now faces a narrow three-week window during the height of election season. There is hope that it could pass in the post-election lame-duck session, but only if the Democrats suffer substantial losses in the upcoming midterm elections. A unanimous consent agreement was needed for passage, which the crypto bill lacked due to disagreements among at least ten senators.
The Clarity Act faced criticism from a recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece and last-minute opposition from Republican senators, including Senator Josh Hawley. Slaughter emphasizes that 'policy in DC is still downstream of elite media,' implying that winning over policymakers and the elite media remains an industry challenge.
