Crypto Clarity Bill Hits Roadblock on Capitol Hill
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act stalled before the Senate's August recess, leaving the crypto industry in limbo. Despite President Donald Trump's push for a swift legislative win, the bill failed to secure its floor vote due to procedural hurdles and political gridlock.
The legislation aims to define clear lines between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), providing tokens with legal clarity on whether they are securities or commodities. However, negotiations hit a wall over several major sticking points, including ethics and conflicts, illicit finance controls, and consumer protections.
The bill's supporters need at least 60 votes to break a potential filibuster in the 100-member Senate chamber, where Republicans hold 53 seats. Leadership attempted to secure eight Democratic votes to cross the aisle but ultimately failed to stitch together the necessary support before the August break.
