Crypto Consolidation Accelerates: Two Projects Dominate 67% of App Revenue
The cryptocurrency industry is undergoing a severe consolidation phase, according to ARK Invest researcher Lorenzo Valente. This time around, capital allocation is tightening sharply, and teams or exchanges without product-market fit are exiting rather than pivoting.
In the past, bear markets were survivable through patience, but this cycle feels different. The revenue data reveals that Hyperliquid and PumpFun alone account for 67% of total application revenue, while the top three projects, including Ethena, capture nearly 80%. This concentration is not limited to applications; it's also seen in infrastructure and Layer 1 blockchains.
Valente forecasts a wave of consolidation-driven activity, including increased mergers and acquisitions, higher bankruptcy filings, more project shutdowns, and greater talent acquisition activity. When revenue is this concentrated, acquirers have strong incentives to buy rather than build, particularly for technology, user bases, or teams that would otherwise take years to develop organically.
The implication of these trends is significant: projects without real user demand or sustainable revenue models are finding no lifeline. This consolidation is not a phase to wait out; for those caught on the wrong side, the coming months may determine whether they survive at all.
