Crypto ETNs in Your Portfolio: A Note, Not a Fund Unit

Crypto ETNs in your portfolio may not be what you think they are. When buying Bitcoin through a securities account, you're typically purchasing a note that certifies a claim against a company, rather than owning the actual cryptocurrency itself.

According to an analysis of Xetra's product list by cryptoticker.io on September 12, 2026, there are 122 distinct crypto ETNs from 16 issuer families with securities identification numbers originating in six different countries. These notes track the price of an underlying asset and their repayment depends on the issuer.

There's a crucial difference between a crypto ETN and an ETF (exchange-traded fund). An ETF is a segregated fund where investors' money is held separately from the assets of the fund company, whereas an ETN has no such construction. It's essentially a receivable that makes you a creditor, with your claim joining the queue with every other claim in case the issuer defaults.

Issuers often address this risk by collateralizing their notes, but this doesn't replace a segregated fund and relies on the effectiveness of the custody chain behind it. The practical advantage remains, however: you don't need a wallet, private key, or account at a crypto exchange to buy these products, as purchases settle through your brokerage account.

The analysis also found that some products appear twice in the list, once in euros and once in US dollars, with the same securities identification number but different trading currencies. This can lead to unexpected currency conversions and bid-ask spreads when buying or selling.
