Crypto ETP Assets Surge 27% in August as Investors Jump In
Fineqia International Inc's senior associate Matteo Greco discussed the August rebound in crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs), which saw a 27% jump in assets under management. This growth outpaced the wider crypto market, which rose 21%, driven by both increasing prices and renewed inflows.
Greco noted that investors stopped waiting for price confirmation and started to increase their purchase volume after the recent price action. In particular, US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted around $1.6 billion of inflows over four days in the final week of August, pushing AUM growth beyond what market appreciation alone could explain.
Ethereum ETPs rose 43% against a 32% increase in Ethereum itself, which Greco characterized as a 'catch-up trade' following weaker performance in previous months. Altcoin ETPs also gained more than 40%, indicating greater selectivity and demand beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, although Greco cautioned that the small asset base makes it too early to call this a major institutional shift.
Looking longer term, Greco described the trend as 'structural broadening rather than a structural change,' noting that Bitcoin and Ethereum still account for more than 92% of overall crypto ETP assets under management.
