Crypto Exchange Landscape: CEXs, DEXs, and the Rise of Hybrid Exchanges
The crypto exchange landscape is more complex than it seems, offering different types of exchanges that cater to various needs and preferences.
CEXs (Centralized Exchanges) are fast and liquid but require users to trust a company with their funds and identity. They hold about 70% of global exchange-traded crypto volume, according to CoinGecko data from early 2026.
Demanding more technical knowledge, DEXs (Decentralized Exchanges) let traders trade directly from their own wallets without creating an account. However, they carry smart contract risk and may incur higher fees due to gas payments on congested networks.
Hybrid exchanges attempt to bridge the gap between CEXs and DEXs by offering a combination of speed and self-custody. These platforms separate order matching from asset custody, allowing users to maintain control over their funds while still enjoying fast execution speeds.
