Crypto Exchange Shakeout Seen as Healthy Reset Amid Industry-Wide Purge
Three major crypto exchanges have shut down or begun winding down operations this month: AscendEX, BitMEX, and BitMart. The closures have sparked a bullish reaction from analysts, who see them as a healthy reset for the industry.
Moonrock Capital's Simon Dedic attributed the shutdowns to the extraction business model's flaws, which rely on a steady supply of new users. He noted that 'the market is actually healing' due to the prolonged bear market.
Ran Neuner, CEO of Crypto Banter, made a cycle-timing argument, suggesting that the recent closures could mark the beginning of a broader shakeout among centralized exchanges. He believes that licensed exchanges and institutional capital will dominate the next cycle, leading to amplified liquidity in a smaller market.
However, crypto analyst StarPlatinum warned that the industry-wide purge may lead to greater market concentration and fewer dominant exchanges. Both BitMEX and BitMart cited market conditions and strategy as reasons for winding down, despite neither describing financial failure.
