Crypto Exchanges Blur Asset Class Lines with Universal Exchange Model
The traditional boundaries between different asset classes are being blurred as crypto exchanges expand their offerings to include stocks, commodities, and other financial instruments. Bitget, OKX, and Binance are among the largest platforms making this shift, with Coinbase's 'Everything Exchange' strategy serving as a model for others.
According to Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget, the goal is not just to diversify revenue streams but to create a seamless experience for traders who already move across markets. Chen notes that global traders want to hold multiple assets in one account and capture opportunities as they arise, without waiting for local market hours.
The Universal Exchange concept combines crypto with traditional financial products, including U.S. stocks, foreign exchange, commodities, indices, and other asset classes. OKX has rolled out over 40 tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs, including Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla, which can be traded around the clock for eligible customers.
Crypto-native functionality, such as composability, is seen as a key differentiator in this new landscape. Chen believes that integrating crypto-native features will allow users to move capital more efficiently between markets, rather than just listing everything on one platform.
