Crypto Exchanges Collapse Under Heavy Regulatory Pressure

Share

Cryptocurrency exchanges are shutting down due to low trading volumes and rising regulatory costs. BitMEX, a derivatives exchange, will permanently end its services in September. Another exchange, BitMart, has told users to stop trading within 30 days and withdraw their funds within six months.

The spot trading volume on major centralized exchanges fell to $1.05 trillion in April, the lowest level in 25 months. This decline is also evident in South Korea's five largest cryptocurrency exchanges, which have seen a drop of 88% from their peak.

According to Jason Fernandes, co-founder of AdLunam, 'There is no longer enough trading volume or retail investment demand.' He believes that only exchanges not relying on retail trading will survive. Michael van de Poppe, chief investment officer at MN Capital, added that smaller exchanges are left with two options: leave the market or pursue mergers and acquisitions.

To stay afloat, exchanges need scale, regulatory compliance, reserve transparency, and a broader lineup of financial products, rather than relying on short-term speculative demand from retail investors. This shift is expected to be a defining factor in the future of cryptocurrency exchanges.
